FAQ

What is Prism Learning Community and its mission?

Prism is an inclusive and diverse homeschool cooperative and resource. Prism coordinates social activities, classes, seasonal celebrations, and community service projects.  Our mission is to have a family centered community that offers opportunities to develop meaningful life skills, inspires a love of life long learning, and provides  an inclusive space for all community members to share their passions.

Is Prism right for my family?

We have found that families who make educational decisions together and view learning as a life long process benefit the most from the Prism community. Prism is a choice based cooperative, meaning members choose the classes that are of interest to them. Prism does not adhere to any one educational philosophy. We respect each family's unique structure and homeschooling path. Prism welcomes families new to homeschooling.

What type of classes do you offer and who facilitates?

We provide an interdisciplinary learning environment, combining “core” academic subjects, with engaging hands-on projects. Members work in small mixed-age classes for collaborative projects, science experiments, and “enrichment” activities. We rely on both parent volunteers and independent paid teachers to develop and facilitate classes.

Where does Prism meet for classes?

Prism meets at the UUFW 565 Pine Ave, Waynesboro VA for Tuesday & Thursday classes.

Do I have to stay on site while my child(ren) are in class?

Parents or guardians must stay on site with their children unless other arrangements have been made.

A parent may ask another individual to supervise children as long as the individual remaining on site can supervise the number of children in his or her care and is willing to accept full responsibility for all such children.

Do I have to volunteer?

Prism operates solely on the support and volunteerism of its members. Families may earn volunteer credits  to lower their quarterly dues responsibility by filling volunteer positions needed for daily operations at PRISM. We ask families to consider signing up for a minimum of 12 credits per quarter. Credits will be deducted from the subsequent quarter dues.

What if I can't volunteer at all?

We understand that some families are unable to volunteer their time. Families that do not volunteer will not receive credits and will simply pay the full cost of dues.

How is Prism structured?

Member driven committees coordinate co-op and community activities. All Prism members have a voice in the community and are encouraged to attend the monthly meeting to address the needs and direction of the community.  Prism has a board of directors that is responsible for maintaining the overall policy and sustainability of the community.

"Hi all - Just wanted to say that T. and D.

(and me as well) all enjoyed their first week being a part of Prism. The things they have learned in their classes are spilling over into their daily activities in the best way. We have already had unprompted discussions about cereal box marketing (why there are smiling people on the box of Rice Chex), raided the recycling in preparation to make more wheel/axle combos this afternoon, and made mini pancakes together this morning, with a request to make bread and waffles next week. And now the boys are making simple machines out of buckets, bags, dog leashes, carabiners, and their wheeled toys. We love Prism! Thank you for being so welcoming"!
